Vietnam's durian exports to China surpass Thailand for the first time

In 2025, for the first time Vietnam surpassed Thailand in the total volume of fresh durian exports to the Chinese market.

On January 27, Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Tuyen - former Director of the Dong Thap Provincial Agricultural Extension Center - said that according to Chinese Customs data, in 2025, for the first time Vietnam surpassed Thailand in total fresh durian exports to the Chinese market.

According to this data, in 2025 China imported a total of 1,868,003 tons of durian from 5 countries, including: Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines and Cambodia. In which, Vietnam leads with 941,004 tons, accounting for 50.37%; followed by Thailand with 920,749 tons, accounting for 49.29%. Similarly, the Philippines is 3,064 tons, Malaysia is 3,041 tons (both reaching a rate of 0.16%) and Cambodia is 145 tons (0.01%).

This is considered a strong development step for Vietnamese durian when it has always been behind Thailand for many years.

According to data from the Department of Agriculture, Thai Embassy in China, in 2023 Vietnam's durian exports to China accounted for 34.55% of the market share compared to Thailand's 65.79%. By 2024, Vietnam also only reached 47.22%, while Thailand reached 51.90%.
