Not all drivers understand and use the reserve tire properly. Here are important rules to keep in mind:
Do not use spare tires like the main tire
On most popular vehicles today, spare tires are often temporary, smaller and lighter than the main tire. The purpose of such a design is to save space and weight for the vehicle. Therefore, this type of tire should only be used for a limited period of time and range.
Conservative tires should only be used within a range of 80km and should not exceed 80km/h, said James Taylor, a technical expert at the American Automobile Association (AAA). Exceeding this limit will increase the risk of accidents due to overloaded tires or insufficient traction".
Only use in emergencies and replace as soon as possible
Backup tires are not designed to completely replace the main tire for a long time. It should only be used when there is no other choice. As soon as possible, the driver needs to go to the nearest garage to repair or replace the main tire.
In addition, many current models are only equipped with tire patches or electric pumps instead of spare tires. This makes many people subjective and confused when encountering real incidents.
Periodically checking reserve tire pressure
A common mistake that many drivers make is forgetting to check the spare tire. According to Mr. James Taylor, many accidents occur because drivers discover damaged main tires, but the spare tires are too young or have been damaged before.
Support tires also need to be checked for periodic pressure, at least once a month. Make sure its always ready when needed, Taylor advised.
Notes when installing spare tires
When installing a spare tire, drivers should try to attach it to the rear wheel instead of the front wheel, especially on front-wheel drive vehicles (FWD). Installing small tires on the front wheels can greatly affect the handling, transmission and braking systems.
If forced to install it on the front wheel, drive carefully and do not perform sudden operations such as braking over or speeding.
Note
Backup tires are a temporary life plan in unfortunate situations. Understanding the function and limitations of this type of tire will help drivers protect the safety of themselves and other road users. Don't forget to check and maintain your spare tire regularly as you won't know when you need it.
