Makeup products are contaminated with potentially deadly bacteria because most are not cleaned and used long after their expiration dates, according to a study published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology.
The bacteria can cause illnesses ranging from skin infections to blood poisoning if used near the eyes, mouth or on cuts or scratches, say researchers from Aston University in the UK.
Poor hygiene of makeup tools, especially makeup sponges, is a concern because they carry high levels of E. coli bacteria, said Amreen Bashir, co-lead author of the study. Additionally, makeup sponges or applicators used to apply foundation had the highest levels of harmful bacteria, with the majority (93%) never having been cleaned.
Therefore, use them for a short time and then replace your makeup sponges or wash and dry them regularly to ensure safety.
