No Competitive Pressure at "Sister Who Makes Wave"
Singer Ngoc Anh's decision to participate in "Sister Who Makes Wave" at the age of 60 surprised many audiences. How did she consider this special return to the stage?
- At first, when I received the invitation from the program, I thought about it. Then, I gave myself a week to make a decision.
I asked my daughter and she was 100% supportive. I think this is an art show, not a gimmick. That's why I like it.
This is also an opportunity for me to meet my beloved audience. The audience of the 1990s will see a different Ngoc Anh compared to 30 - 40 years ago.
I also want to get to know my young audience, the GenZ generation, who were not born yet when I sang.
Hopefully through the program, the audience will see how brilliant Ngoc Anh was in her youth.
There are many generations in the show, some of them are even very young. The competition will have people moving on and people staying. What do you think about the competition in the show?
- I think every game has winners and losers. Sometimes it's luck. But I think in "Sister Who Makes Wave" it's not an individual competition, it's a team competition. Every performance is a team performance.
So, for now, we just do our part in the group well; even if we leave, I'll still be happy because I tried my best.
The program has many famous singers such as My Linh, Minh Tuyet... Are you afraid of competing with these Sisters?
- You are all my juniors. When I became famous, My Linh, Minh Tuyet, Phuong Thanh... were all young singers. You are much younger than me. I don't compete with you because we participate with a relaxed mindset.
In the program, I worked with My Linh and Minh Tuyet. They all respect and love me. When it comes to singing, they don't dare compare me to them because I sang 10 or 20 years before them. But if there is a friend in the group who is in charge of the profession or the group leader, they will share and I will listen and learn to make my group the best, because I cannot be alone.
I don't keep a big ego on the show. There's no room for an independent individual on this show.
If we talk about competitors, who are the competitors that you have to be wary of in "Sister Who Makes Wave"?
- Here, I don't see any opponents. Everyone is like a family. I don't feel pressured to win against anyone.
Did you expect to be the champion?
- I'm afraid of saying too much, everything is still being filmed, I just hope everyone will follow and predict the results. In the end, whatever the result is, I will happily accept it.
Receive compliments and criticism from the audience
Famous singer Ngoc Anh has had a 40-year illustrious career. Looking back at the past milestones, what makes you proud?
-That was my youth, many years of singing, I always worked hard, diligently and improved my career. I won many awards, this is also my joy in the profession.
At the age of 60, are you ever afraid that the audience will forget you?
- If I stop working, the audience will probably forget me. But for me, I will sing until I can't sing anymore. I never intended to retire because I have older idols like Mai Le Huyen, Thai Chau... They are all in their 80s but still sing and have a certain number of fans.
Now, if young audiences don't listen to old music or old singers, there are people like my parents and grandparents who are my age who will love me. Currently, my voice and health are still normal and I sing well, so there is no reason to retire.
Ngoc Anh has participated in many programs as a judge, but now she is a contestant. What is interesting about this change?
- I feel like I'm back to my 20s, 15s to compete in music. But I don't feel pressured because the audience doesn't judge me personally, they judge the group.
In the show, we only perform for the audience to vote and they choose the performances of 5-7 people, not just me.
The show you participate in will be controversial because some people praise it and others criticize it. How does Ngoc Anh accept this?
- I think that a singer on stage is a daughter-in-law to hundreds of people. I have been singing for 40 years, and have had both praise and criticism. Some people like it, but others don't. That's normal. If I were shocked, I would have been shocked at the age of 20-30 because I didn't want people to talk negatively about me.
However, I have 40 years of experience, if the audience says that I sing poorly, I hope the audience will analyze for me what I am not good at so that I can improve. If the audience gives wrong comments, I can ignore them.
What do you think about tricks in game shows?
- I have never used any tricks. I am confident that I am a talented singer. I have a voice, and I have risen thanks to my voice.
I am here today because of my voice. That is undeniable and I have not used any tricks in the past 40 years.
But perhaps at the present time, I think some young artists do not use tricks but will have strategies to help their names stand out and attract attention such as making clips, creating situations, promoting images... If this does not have a negative impact on society, I think it is still acceptable.
But if there are dirty tricks, I don't accept them. I think if there are dirty tricks, the audience will reject them. Because the current audience is very sensitive.
For Ngoc Anh, as a singer, is voice or appearance more important?
- I affirm that it is the voice. Because your voice is the only thing that can win over the audience. If a singer is not beautiful, the audience will close their eyes and listen. But if that singer has both voice and beauty, they will have an advantage over others. But on the contrary, only appearance without voice will not survive in the profession in the long run.
What do you think about lip syncing?
- I think it depends on the situation. In the case of filming, I think lip-syncing is necessary because filming live on television is very difficult. Even if the singer sings well live, when on camera there are many factors that affect it, it cannot be good.
I think the crew wants to keep the sound good and avoid unnecessary problems like wind, storms... so they need the singer to lip-sync. I think that is acceptable and even mandatory.
If singing live, selling tickets on stage, if the singer only dances well but lip-syncs, I won't accept it.
Vietnamese audiences affectionately call her the Queen of Rock. Until now, does Rock music still burn within you?
- I thank everyone for calling me that! I accept and appreciate it. However, I have to practice to be worthy of the title everyone gives me.
Currently, I still follow Rock music. I sing on stage 8-10 songs, all of which are Rock music. Sometimes in an event, the atmosphere is explosive, if I sing love songs, the atmosphere will be dull. So, once I bring Rock music to perform, I will follow the whole event.
