Tu Duc Mausoleum, when the tomb becomes a resting place

On weekends and especially on National Day September 2nd, Tu Duc Mausoleum is more crowded than usual. Tourists line up through the ancient gates, families take young children to visit, and many young people come to take photos and check-in in traditional costumes. Amidst that crowd, Tu Duc Mausoleum (Hue City) still retains a very unique contemplative beauty.
Tu Duc Mausoleum was started construction in 1864 and basically completed in 1867, spreading between green trees, lakes and architectures faintly visible under the forest canopy. Looking from Luu Khiem Lake, orange-yellow tiled roofs appear in the green of trees, the calm water surface stretches out its reach. The architecture seems to be not separated from nature but becomes a part of the landscape.
That is also what makes Lang Tu Duc different.
The back of Khiem Cung Mon stands out with a royal tiled roof and decorative patches of dragons and clouds embossed and inlaid with sophisticated ceramics. The yellow, orange and blue colors on the roof contrast with the dark wooden frame below, creating the elaborate characteristic of Nguyen royal architecture.
Walking through the mausoleum, people not only see gates, temples or tiled roofs covered in time. Sometimes, just a section of the lake, a row of trees or a communal house roof reflected on the water surface is enough to create a complete scene. Mossy stone walls, railings with old decorations, colorful ceramic mosaic motifs... all bear the traces of time but do not make the space heavy.
Conversely, it is this old-fashionedness that makes Tu Duc Mausoleum deeper.

Amidst the ancient architectural space, today's visitors create new movements for the heritage. The decorative patches of dragons, clouds and mascots on the tiled roof show the sophistication of Hue royal ceramic mosaic art. Over time, although covered with moss, the lines and colors still create a lively look on the ancient tiled roofs.
From dragon decoration details, mascots on the tiled roof to the inner worship space, the artistic imprint of the Nguyen Dynasty is present at many levels. But the deeper you go, the more you realize that the landscape is what holds you back the longest. Lakes, trees, winding roads and structures arranged at many heights create a feeling more like a garden than a normal mausoleum.
Xung Khiem Ta by Luu Khiem Lake used to be a place for King Tu Duc to enjoy flowers, admire the scenery, and write poetry. Today, that space has become a stop for tourists in traditional ancient costumes, capturing moments amidst the contemplative landscape.A young person in ao dai sitting by the lake, creating an interesting intersection between the ancient royal court space and today's life.
Perhaps that is not accidental. Tu Duc has devoted a lot of effort to the place he both considered a tomb and a resting place when he was alive. Therefore, here there is architecture, nature and spaces for sightseeing and relaxation.
More than a century later, that space continues a different life.
Hoa Khiem Palace preserves a worship space with many carved and lacquered, gold-plated designs typical of Nguyen royal court architecture. In front, visitors respectfully offer incense, creating a continuation between the ancient royal court space and today's religious life.An exquisitely carved wooden shrine in the interior space of Lang Tu Duc, highlighted by the technique of lacquer and gold plating along with dragon and cloud motifs. Light and layers of curtains create depth, highlighting the solemnity and sophistication of the royal court interior.

Tourists sit by the lake, looking at the water surface and trees. These very contemporary activities do not make the relic lose its old beauty; on the contrary, they show that the heritage only truly lives when someone still enters, looks at it and finds something for themselves in it.

Through a miniature model, the architectural space and traces of the past are received with the curious eyes of today's young generation.
Tu Duc Mausoleum may not be a place that is overwhelming at first sight. But the slower you go, the easier it is to recognize its beauty. A work placed in the middle of nature, where architecture does not overwhelm the landscape but together with nature creates a peaceful space. And perhaps, that is what makes people still want to return.
