Student group develops application to support patients to access medical services

Starting from practical needs, a group of FPT University students built a technology application platform to support patients before medical examination and treatment.

Starting from the reality that many people are hesitant to go for medical examination due to lack of information about procedures, medical examination and treatment space or anxiety, a group of FPT University students has developed OrcaX - a digital technology application project to support patients to access information and experience some medical services before going to the hospital.

OrcaX is developed by a group of interdisciplinary students from FPT University Can Tho campus, including Nguyen Thanh Truong and Nguyen Duc Thang (software engineering major), along with Nguyen Hoang Ngoc Ngan, Luu Nguyen Khang Hy and Le Ba Hai Truong (graphic design and digital arts major).

Nguyen Thanh Truong - Head of the project group - shared: "We see that many people are reluctant to go for eye exams because of complex procedures, psychological anxiety or geographical distance. From there, the group asked the question: Is it possible to bring hospitals closer to people by technology?

Answering that problem, OrcaX developed the "360° Hospital" platform - where users can visit the entire hospital space through panoramic image technology, combined with detailed sound guidance.

Not stopping at providing information, the platform also integrates basic vision testing modules, sắc giác tests, knowledge libraries and games for interaction. In particular, the group also applies machine learning models to develop algorithms for processing and analyzing images, supporting early recognition and screening of abnormal signs related to ophthalmic diseases.

We not only provide information, we allow patients to "live" in hospital space before they go there. This significantly reduces anxiety, one of the major barriers but often overlooked in medical experience" - Truong emphasized.

Unlike existing medical platforms that mainly stop at scheduling or data management, OrcaX chooses the "role-playing experience" approach. The combination of WebVR technology, AI and interactive design makes inherently dry medical procedures intuitive and accessible, especially for young people.

According to the group, the gap between technology and patient experience still exists. "We do not replace doctors, but build the best tools to support doctors and patients" - Truong affirmed.

One of the important milestones of OrcaX is that it does not stop at the idea but has been implemented in practice at VISI Soc Trang Eye Hospital (under VISI Medical Group). Through the connection from the instructor - Dr. Nguyen Trong Luan, the group has the opportunity to sign product handover contracts and gradually integrate them into the hospital's actual operating process.

According to Mr. Nguyen Tien Duc - Operations Director of VISI Medical Group, OrcaX brings a new approach: "The project is not just a technology solution but a new approach in digital health transformation, starting from the actual needs of patients. Allowing users to experience hospitals, basic vision tests and access eye knowledge right on a digital platform will help shorten the gap between people and quality healthcare services.

Not only stopping at the domestic level, thanks to the support from VISI Medical Group, OrcaX also participated in an eye care campaign for 600 patients in Phnom Penh (Cambodia). Here, the group both supports coordination and observes the entire medical examination and treatment journey to optimize products.
