According to the report of the Traffic Safety Committee of Can Tho City, in the first 9 months of 2025, there were 500 traffic accidents in the area, killing 303 people and injuring 319 people. Compared to the same period in 2024, the number of accidents decreased by 53 cases, the number of injuries decreased by 91 people, but the number of deaths increased by 31.
Of which, the road accounted for the highest rate with 492 cases, killing 297 people and injuring 317 people; the waterway accounted for 8 cases, killing 6 people and injuring 2 people.
The main causes of the accident were identified as: violations of the section and lane (47 cases), lack of attention (44 cases), failure to control the steering wheel (37 cases), and changing direction in violation of regulations (35 cases). In addition, some cases related to alcohol, overtaking are against regulations and pedestrians are not safe on the road.
The authorities have organized more than 24,000 patrols and inspections with nearly 81,000 officers participating; recorded more than 72,000 violations, administratively sanctioned more than 61,000 cases with a total amount of more than 120 billion VND; revoked over 6,300 driving licenses and temporarily detained more than 14,000 vehicles.
To achieve the goal of reducing traffic accidents compared to 2024, the People's Committee of Can Tho City has just issued an official dispatch to strengthen the implementation of solutions to ensure traffic order and safety in the last months of 2025.
Accordingly, the City Police Department was assigned to direct the Traffic Police force to increase patrols, control, and strictly handle violations that are the main causes of accidents, such as: speeding, violating alcohol concentration, using drugs, transporting overloaded vehicles, not having a driver's license, not wearing helmets, carrying more people than prescribed, gathering to disturb public order.
The Department of Construction shall preside over and coordinate with the City Police, People's Committees of communes, wards and related units to promote propaganda of traffic laws in many appropriate and accessible forms; at the same time, focus on handling traffic congestion points and black spots on national and provincial highways.
For the People's Committees of communes and wards, the Chairman of the city requested to closely follow the actual situation, proactively apply drastic solutions when traffic safety and order are complicated; at the same time, advise the Party committees at the same level to issue instructions to ensure safety and reduce accidents in the area.
The city's traffic safety is responsible for monitoring, inspecting, urging and promptly advising on resolving arising issues.
