On February 25, the General Department of Hydrometeorology said that the Council of the Storm Committee had just concluded the 57th annual meeting held in the Philippines, and agreed to remove some names of storms that caused heavy damage to the community.
Among them, Typhoon Trami (named by Vietnam) has severely affected localities in the Philippines.
Typhoon Yagi (named by Japan) has caused severe damage to northern provinces of Vietnam in 2024.
Typhoon Yagi has been proposed for removal by three countries, Vietnam, China and the Philippines, and several other typhoon names have caused severe damage to members of the Typhoon Committee.
On this occasion, the Storm Committee agreed with the new storm name proposed by Vietnam to replace the name of Saola (Sao La) and proposed to remove the keyword of the 56th annual meeting (in 2024), which is the name Saobien (Sao Bien).
According to the regulations approved by the Storm Committee at the 31st Meeting of the Storm Committee held in 1998 in the Philippines, National Hydrometeorological Agencies that are members of the Storm Committee will be allowed to propose the removal of one or more storm names from the list of storm names if the storm has such names causing serious devastation or for any other reason.
Also at the annual meeting of the Storm Committee Council, representative of the Vietnam Hydrometeorological Agency - Mr. Do Tien Anh, Director of the Department of Science, Technology and International Cooperation, was assigned to continue to hold the position of Head of the Storm Committee's Coordination and Research Department for the 2025-2027 term in coordinating and connecting members of the Storm Committee in research, training activities, and professional exchanges in hydrometeorological forecasting and disaster warnings, contributing to minimizing natural disaster risks in the area.
Storm No. 3 Yagi made landfall in the Quang Ninh - Hai Phong area at noon on September 7, 2024 with strong winds of level 10 - 12, gusting to level 13 - 15, while Bai Chay station at an altitude of 34m was monitored with strong winds of level 14, gusting to level 17.
This is considered the strongest storm in 30 years in the East Sea, 70 years on the mainland of Vietnam. Yagi is also a storm that increases in intensity very quickly (within 24 hours of increasing the intensity of the storm to 8 levels) and maintains super typhoon level for a long time, when making landfall in the East of Hainan Island (China), it still maintains the intensity of the super typhoon.
As of September 27, 2024, storm No. 3 Yagi and floods after the storm left 344 people dead or missing; 1,976 injured; total initial economic damage is estimated at over VND 81,503 billion.
