The International Ozone Day 2024 was chosen by the International Ozone Secretariat as the theme: "The Montreal Protocol: Accelerating Climate Action". Accordingly, the Department of Climate Change was assigned by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to organize the Workshop "International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer 2024 - 30 years of Vietnam's participation in the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol".
Speaking at the workshop, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Le Cong Thanh said that after 30 years of participating in the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol, Vietnam has been internationally recognized as an active and highly responsible member; making efforts to implement many tasks and solutions to manage and eliminate ozone-depleting substances and achieving many important results. According to statistics and assessments of the International Ozone Secretariat announced at the meeting last July, Vietnam has eliminated the consumption of 220 million tons of CO2 equivalent since joining.
To continue to synchronously and effectively implement the roadmap, the National Plan and fulfill the commitments that Vietnam has participated in, it is necessary to deploy many activities, including a number of key tasks.
Accordingly, continue to improve institutions and policies on management, elimination of controlled substances and promulgate standards, regulations and technical guidelines. Strengthen inter-sectoral coordination in inspection and supervision of law enforcement; strengthen control of import and export and the use of controlled substances, in which import and export management agencies, market management agencies and customs forces play a very important role.
In addition, it is necessary to support and encourage activities to convert technology to use climate-friendly substances, improve energy efficiency of cooling equipment; promote collection, recycling, reuse and treatment of substances controlled under the Montreal Protocol; deploy models of applying sustainable cooling technology, and business cooling services in urban areas, residential areas, office buildings, commercial buildings and public works.
At the same time, implement training programs to enhance capacity in management and elimination of controlled substances for law enforcement officers and law enforcement supervisors; lecturers at training facilities; and officers at organizations that assess and issue vocational skills certificates. Continue to promote international cooperation activities and mobilize international support to effectively implement national goals.
