Accordingly, today and tonight (8.26), Hanoi will have moderate rain, heavy rain, some places with very heavy rain and thunderstorms. During thunderstorms, it is necessary to be on guard against the risk of tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts of wind.
"The rainfall in the northern area of the city is generally 50 - 100mm, in some places over 150mm. The western and southern areas and the city center are generally 40 - 70mm, some places over 100mm" - Mr. Hiep provided detailed information on rainfall forecast.
Regarding the forecast of the impact of heavy rain, according to Mr. Hiep, thunderstorms may be accompanied by tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts of wind that will break trees, damage houses, traffic works and infrastructure.
"Heavy rain overloads the urban drainage system, causing flooding in residential areas, urban areas and low-lying areas, traffic congestion due to flooding of roads and reduced visibility when driving, causing slippery and traffic accidents" - Mr. Hiep especially emphasized.
High-intensity rain in a short period of time can cause landslides in mountainous areas, where the terrain is steep. The risk level of natural disasters due to heavy rain is level 1.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, it is forecasted that from early morning of August 26 to the morning of August 27, the midlands and deltas of the North, Son La, Lao Cai will have moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms with common rainfall of 60 - 120mm, locally very heavy rain over 200mm.
On August 26, the area from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh will have moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms with common rainfall of 50 - 100mm, locally very heavy rain over 150mm.
Previously, the Northern Hydrometeorological Agency also issued a warning that in the next 3 - 6 hours (from 6:40 a.m. on August 25), Hanoi and neighboring areas will continue to have moderate to heavy rain, with total accumulated rainfall generally ranging from 30 - 50mm, in some places higher.
This rain will cause localized flooding for many streets with the largest flooding depth commonly from 0.3 - 0.5m, some places will be flooded deeper. The flooding time is about 30 - 60 minutes, some places are flooded longer. Prevent flooding in some low-lying areas in suburban areas.
