Although it is only May - not yet the peak of the flood season - the North and Central regions have recorded unusually heavy rains.
In that situation, today, May 29, the Department of Hydrometeorology held a meeting with units on the flood situation and actions of the Ministry and branches in the coming time. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Hoang Hiep chaired the meeting.

Information about the weather from the beginning of the year until now, Mr. Mai Van Khiem, Director of the National Meteorological Forecast Center, the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, said that the areas of Vietnam North, Northern Delta, North Central Coast - Central Central and Southern Vietnam have a higher total rainfall than the average of many years from 15 - 30%, some places over 80% (such as Bai Thuong - Thanh Hoa 638mm compared to 416mm average).
With the current rain in the North, the average daily flow to Lai Chau Lake is forecast to fluctuate from 400-500m3/s; Son La Lake fluctuates from 900 - 1,200m3/s; Hoa Binh Lake fluctuates from700 - 2200m3/s; Tuyen Quang Lake fluctuates from 320 - 380m3/s. Based on the current water level, Son La, Hoa Binh and Tuyen Quang lakes are discharging water with a larger flow and equal to the flow to the lake.
From now on May 29 to May 31, on the Thao River, the Lo River and small rivers in the Northern region and Thanh Hoa, there is a possibility of a flood, with a flood amplitude of 2 - 5m. There is a high risk of flooding in low-lying areas along rivers; flash floods, landslides on steep slopes in the mountainous areas of the North and Thanh Hoa.
"In the long term, moderate rain, heavy rain is expected to occur from June - 8.2025 in the North, North Central, Central Highlands, Southern region. Particularly, the Central region will increase rain from September - 2025. In the near future, the heat decreases in the Central Highlands, Southern region, while maintaining in the North, Central Vietnam to August25" - Mr. Khiem added.

Director of the Department of Hydrometeorology Nguyen Thuong Hien said that currently, the periodic maintenance of some equipment systems such as thunderstorm detection stations, satellite cloud image collection and processing systems, and ultrasound - radioactive measurement equipment has been completed.
However, important equipment such as pilot weather, pilot sea, radio Spy and optical wind measurement systems have not been maintained due to lack of materials. The Department of Hydrometeorology has submitted a list and bidding plan and will immediately implement maintenance when approved. The regional Hydrometeorological Station, inspection and maintenance work is being actively implemented.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep requested the Department of Hydrometeorology and the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting to update the bulletins in accordance with regulations, trying to have high-precision forecasts 3 - 6 hours in advance.
"This is an important factor to reduce damage caused by unusual rains" - Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep emphasized.
In the immediate future, the Deputy Minister asked the Department of Dike Management and Natural Disaster Prevention to immediately set up Zalo group so that when the emergency information will be sent to the provincial leaders, to have the basis for immediately deploying natural disaster prevention scenarios. On the other hand, extreme rain leads to very high risk of landslides. In the context of the two -level government, in the immediate future, when the commune's government is unknown, the Department needs to have a plan to transmit immediately to the district level in emergency areas after the information of extreme rain.
