Climate change is increasingly clearly impacting life in urban areas. Unusual heavy rains causing prolonged flooding or extreme heat waves... are posing many challenges to infrastructure, environment, health and quality of life for people.
In large cities, the process of concretization, high construction density and increasing energy demand may increase pressure from extreme weather phenomena. During heat waves, the demand for air conditioners and cooling equipment increases, leading to pressure on the energy system and people's living costs.
These facts show that climate change response cannot just stop at temporary solutions when natural disasters or extreme weather occur. Cities need to proactively improve their adaptability, while promoting more efficient, economical and sustainable energy use.
In that context, Lao Dong Newspaper organized a seminar "Adaptive solutions for urban areas before climate change", to analyze the challenges that climate change poses to urban areas, and at the same time exchange solutions for adaptation, cooling down and energy saving and efficiency, towards building green and sustainable urban areas.
The seminar was attended by 2 guests: Dr. Truong Ba Kien - Deputy Director of the Center for Meteorology and Climate Research, Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology, Environment and Marine Science, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and Dr. Trinh Quoc Dung - Faculty of Thermal Energy, Mechanical School, Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
At the seminar, guests will analyze the developments of climate change, extreme hot weather trends and the level of impact on urban areas; and clarify the link between hot weather, thermal island effect and energy demand.
In addition, the program focuses on exchanging views on urban adaptation requirements to climate change, feasible solutions to reduce energy consumption and areas with much room to save energy in urban areas.
Solutions for the project, ways to reduce cooling demand will also be analyzed, along with things that people can do right in daily life, especially using air conditioners and electrical appliances in a economical and efficient direction.
