The historic storm Yagi and its aftermath left heavy losses for the people of the northern provinces. In the spirit of mutual love and support for people in the flood-hit areas, on September 21-22, the working group of Bach Mai Hospital carried out many practical activities to support colleagues and people of Lao Cai province to overcome the pain and quickly stabilize their lives.
Due to the impact of storm No. 3 (storm Yagi), from September 7 to 11, Bac Ha district had heavy rain, many places had very heavy rain, causing severe damage to people, property and crops. In particular, the landslide buried households in Nam Tong village, causing 18 deaths and missing people (14 bodies have been found, 4 people are still missing) and 11 people were injured. Access for rescue and relief efforts was very difficult because the main road to the village had hundreds of landslides.
Overcoming nearly 20 km of bumpy, muddy roads left by the consequences of floods, the delegation of Bach Mai Hospital led by Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, went to the place where the people were temporarily staying to visit, share and send gifts and affection from the hospital staff to the people, hoping that the people would soon overcome the loss and pain, and quickly stabilize their lives.
Within the framework of the program to support Lao Cai province to overcome the damage after storm No. 3, on the morning of September 22, 2024, a working delegation of Bach Mai Hospital coordinated with Lao Cai Department of Health to organize free medical examination and treatment for over 500 people in Bac Ha district.
Sharing about this humane activity, Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Van Giap, Deputy Director of Bach Mai Hospital said: The hospital has sent doctors with many years of experience to examine and provide free medicine to people in communes heavily affected by the recent floods such as Nam Luc, Ban Cai and Bao Nhai. Through examining the people, the doctors diagnosed that many people here have skin, digestive, respiratory diseases...
After examining the people, the working group distributed free medicine including common medicines such as: antibiotics, pain relievers, fever reducers, vitamins... to people severely affected by the flood.
This free medical examination and medicine provision activity aims to help people in flooded areas in preventing and fighting common diseases, limiting possible epidemics to improve people's health.
Also within the framework of the working trip, Deputy Minister of Health Le Duc Luan and the delegation of Bach Mai Hospital visited, worked and provided support to the Lao Cai health sector to overcome the consequences of floods.
At the meeting, Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co, on behalf of more than 4,000 doctors, nurses and workers of the hospital, expressed his condolences for the losses in Lao Cai province; and said that Bach Mai Hospital has devoted resources, along with contributions from staff and doctors, to support and share with localities affected by floods and storms, including Lao Cai.
Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co informed about the process of treating flood victims in Lao Cai at Bach Mai Hospital, in which he affirmed that the Hospital is continuing to make efforts to treat the girl M.H.T.Ng. (11 years old, Tay ethnic group), who was a victim of the flash flood in Lang Nu village.
Over the past few days, doctors have continuously washed the child's lungs, but the fluid is still cloudy with mud and sand, making it very difficult to clean. Currently, the patient's edema and blood clotting disorder have decreased. The patient is still sedated, on a ventilator, and has weak pupil reflexes, but the pneumonia is very severe due to fluid retention and inhalation of a lot of mud and dirt during the flash flood. Bach Mai Hospital has consulted with Japanese experts to discuss the best treatment plan for the patient with the highest determination.
To support the Lao Cai health sector, Bach Mai Hospital decided to exempt all tuition fees for Lao Cai health workers studying at Bach Mai Hospital from now until the end of 2025, worth 6 billion VND, and at the same time, support the Lao Cai Department of Health to overcome damage after natural disasters with 500 million VND.
