Having a child by cesarean section is a major surgery that requires careful recovery. However, that does not mean that the mother is completely immobile. According to Dr. Vikas Yadav - senior consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology at ShardaCare (India), proper exercise after cesarean section not only helps with faster physical recovery but also improves spirit, supporting the child care process more effectively.
Important benefits of exercise after cesarean section
Helps surgical wounds heal quickly and reduce scar formation: Gentle exercise helps increase blood circulation to the surgical area, supports better tissue recovery and reduces the risk of scarring.
safely increase abdominal muscle strength: The abdominal muscles and pelvic floor are stretched a lot during pregnancy. Practicing light exercises helps gradually restore central strength without causing damage.
Improve posture and reduce back pain: Suppressing and feeding in the wrong position can easily lead to back pain. Exercise helps increase back muscle endurance, stay in shape and limit postpartum pain.
Support for pelvic floor rehabilitation: Even after cesarean section, the pelvic floor is still under pressure during pregnancy. Practicing Kegel exercises helps prevent urinary incontinence and pelvic visceral arrest.
Increased energy, reduced fatigue: It sounds contradictory, but light exercise helps blood circulation, reduces lethargy, improves mood and reduces stress.
Supports weight control and cardiovascular health: Walking or light exercise supports calorie burning, helping mothers control their weight and maintain better cardiovascular health.
Improve mood, reduce the risk of postpartum depression: Exercise helps produce endorphins, a neurotransmitter that brings excitement and positivity, thereby reducing the risk of postpartum depression, increasing confidence and optimism.
Helps digestion improve, reduces constipation: Exercise is a natural way to help the digestive system work effectively, especially useful during the post-operative period when you are prone to constipation.
When should you start exercising after cesarean section?
Each body recovers at a different rate, so mothers should consult a doctor before starting any exercise. Here is an overview guide from Dr. Yadav:
0 - 6 weeks after giving birth: Rest is a top priority. You can start walking around the house and do Kegel if you don't feel any pain. Avoid lifting heavier objects (including objects heavier than your baby).
After 6 weeks (after postpartum examination): If the surgical wound heals well, the doctor may allow increased exercise. However, you should start slowly with simple exercises, avoid high-intensity exercise.
Note
Dr. Vikas Yadav says postpartum exercise is an important part of helping mothers recover completely both physically and mentally. Listen to your body, follow your doctor's instructions and be patient with each step.
