“Pregnant women and their developing fetuses are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of air pollution,” said Dr Pratibha Singhal, Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cloudnine Group of Hospitals (Noida, India). “High concentrations of particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and other pollutants can adversely affect maternal health and fetal development.”
Health risks associated with air pollution during pregnancy
Respiratory problems: Air pollution can lead to respiratory problems in pregnant women, such as asthma and bronchitis, which can reduce oxygen flow to the fetus, affecting development.
Low birth weight: Exposure to pollutants has been linked to low birth weight, a factor associated with developmental delays and a higher risk of chronic diseases in infants.
Premature birth: Elevated pollution levels have been linked to premature labor, leading to premature birth, which can cause complications such as neonatal respiratory distress syndrome.
Neurological effects: Exposure to pollutants during pregnancy can harm fetal brain development, potentially causing cognitive problems and behavioral challenges later in life.
Heart health: Pollution also poses a risk to heart health in pregnant women, increasing the risk of high blood pressure, which can lead to complications during pregnancy.
Protection for pregnant women
Stay informed about air quality: Monitor air quality through apps or trusted sources to plan your daily activities.
Limit outdoor activities: On days when the air quality index (AQI) is high, limit outdoor activities, especially during peak hours. If necessary, go outside in the early morning or late evening when air quality tends to improve.
Create a clean indoor environment: Using an air purifier with a HEPA filter can reduce indoor pollutants, especially in bedrooms and common spaces. On high pollution days, keep windows closed to prevent outdoor pollutants from entering.
Practice healthy nutrition: A balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins supports the health of the expectant mother. Foods rich in antioxidants such as berries, nuts, and green leafy vegetables help combat oxidative stress caused by exposure to pollution. Additionally, drinking plenty of water to aid in detoxification can support overall health.
Managing stress levels: Techniques such as deep breathing, yoga or meditation can reduce stress and improve health during pregnancy.
