    Hai Phong - The national relic of Gam Temple, covering nearly 5 hectares, is an attractive spiritual tourist destination in Hai Phong City, attracting tens of thousands of visitors every Tet holiday.

    Gam Temple (Tan Minh Commune, Tien Lang District, Hai Phong) is one of the Five Sacred Temples of Tien Lang District. The ancients had a saying "First is Bi Temple, second is Gam Temple" to talk about the sacredness of this temple.

    Located in a place with charming feng shui, in the middle of the immense space of rivers, water, sky and clouds: facing the Van Uc River, leaning against the dike, fields, villages of Cam Khe, Toan Thang, Tien Lang, Gam Temple was built during the reign of King Ly Cao Tong, to commemorate the merits of the famous general Ngo Ly Tin.

    According to Mr. Dang Anh Tuyet, Head of the Relic Management Board, Gam Temple is associated with the name of Thai Pho Ngo Ly Tin. He was a talented general who made many contributions to the king and the country during the Ly Dynasty.

    Ngo Ly Tin was born on January 20, Binh Ngo year (1126) in Vinh Dong village, Khoai Chau district, Son Nam town, now Hung Yen province. When he was 18 years old, his parents passed away. After mourning for his parents, he went to Cam Khe village, Binh Ha district, Hai Duong town, now Cam Khe village, Toan Thang commune, to open a school to teach and practice martial arts.

    In the year of Nham Dan (1182), Ngo Ly Tin was appointed as the General of the Army, leading the army by land and water to suppress bandits. In 1183, he was appointed as the commander-in-chief to conquer the Ai Lao army that invaded the border. After returning victorious, he was appointed by the king as the Grand Tutor. In 1188, the court appointed Grand Tutor Ngo Ly Tin as the regent for the king.

    Legend has it that when the country was at peace, the Regent and a group of boats brought soldiers and servants back to visit the old Cam Khe village. Unfortunately, on the way to the Quan Trang - Van Uc river, a big storm occurred, the boat sank, and he and everyone else died (in 1190). His body was washed ashore by the waves on the Cam Khe riverbank. The people mourned him, buried him on the land where he had built a school (now the back palace of Gam temple) and built a temple to commemorate the merits of the talented and brave general. Gam temple currently preserves the tomb containing the body of Thai Pho Ngo Ly Tin.

Cac keo go co ket cau kieu “thuan chong, doc thuoc”, mai lop ngoi mui hai, cac cua theo kieu “cua thung khung khach”.
    After more than 800 years with the ups and downs of time, through many restorations, Gam Temple still retains the ancient architecture of "first front, second back", including 5 front rooms, 3 front rooms and 1 back room. The wooden rafters have the structure of "thuan chong, doc thuoc", the roof is covered with fish-tail tiles, the doors are in the style of "doors with customer frames".

    Inside the temple, there are still 4 ancient bricks from the Ly Dynasty used to pave the front door of the temple - symbolizing the great role of famous general Ngo Ly Tin for the Ly Dynasty court.

    In 1992, the temple was recognized as a national historical relic. In 2010, to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long - Hanoi, the temple invested more than 20 billion VND to restore and reconstruct a number of construction items. The main items in the temple such as the front hall, the middle hall, and the back hall were renovated and embellished to be spacious and sturdy. Some items such as the ceremonial gate, stele house, exhibition hall, guest reception area, surrounding fence... were restored or newly built.

    Behind Gam Temple is a longan tree that is more than 6 centuries old and has been recognized as a heritage tree since 2017.
