Life inside an old level D apartment building in Hanoi

Living in old, seriously degraded apartment buildings that have not been repaired or renovated, some households still try to stay here.
In Ba Dinh district (Hanoi), the C8 Giang Vo apartment complex was assessed by Hanoi city at level D, meaning the structure's load-bearing capacity cannot meet normal usage requirements, there is a general dangerous situation, and all residents need to be evacuated immediately. It is known that this project was built in 1979, consisting of 5-storey buildings. Each house is about 30 square meters, most families have installed "tiger cages" to increase the usable area.Currently, the structure of the C8 Giang Vo apartment building shows signs of cracking in many places. Faced with this situation, the People's Committee of Giang Vo Ward has fenced off the building and placed warning signs to limit people from passing by.To date, this apartment complex has completed the relocation of residents and handed over the site to the local government. However, in addition to the households that have received support money to relocate, there are still a few households remaining in apartment building C8 in units 1 and 2 because they are not yet subject to relocation.Mr. N.T.L's house (2nd floor, unit 1) C8 Giang Vo has an area of only about 36 square meters. Mr. L said that the house is home to all 3 generations of his family. According to observations, due to the small area, many items in the house have to be stacked on top of each other to save space. The outbuildings and kitchen area are quite cramped, only enough for one person to use and cook standing up.The common corridor outside the house was cracked and badly degraded. At the old Ngoc Khanh apartment complex (Ba Dinh district, Hanoi), unit 1, building A of this apartment complex is assessed as a level D dangerous apartment building.Mr. Le Dinh Phuc's house in building A (Ngoc Khanh collective) has deteriorated, the family had to reinforce the gutters to catch water leaking from above.“When the weather is humid and it rains a lot, the house gets soaked, so I can only fix it this way. The water that leaks into the gutter will flow directly into the pre-designed pipe to flow onto the floor,” said Mr. Phuc.On the ceiling and walls of the house, layers of paint are peeling, the pipe system is tangled and damp.Outside, some households still use honeycomb charcoal stoves in the common hallway.
The Hanoi People's Committee recently requested Ba Dinh district to complete the submission of detailed planning, scale 1/500, for the renovation and reconstruction of Thanh Cong, Ngoc Khanh, and Giang Vo apartment buildings in December 2024.
This information made the households living in these old apartment buildings extremely happy. Many residents here said that they are all looking forward to the plan to renovate the old apartment buildings soon so that they can soon have a stable life.
