Until around 18h on August 8, the Cát Lái Traffic Police Team (under the TPHCM Traffic Police Department) was still cooperating with the TP Thủ Đức Fire and Rescue Police Team and other functional units to quickly handle the scene of the series of accidents that caused many vehicles to be burned on Phu My Bridge.
After the incident, the lane on the bridge in the direction from District 7 to TPHCM, over 2 km long, was severely congested, with thousands of cars unable to move.
At the entrance to the bridge, hundreds of vehicles were stuck, causing chaos when the congestion lasted. As the only traffic route connecting District 7 with TPHCM and one of the two routes to Cát Lái - the largest port in the country, the daily traffic volume of trucks carrying goods through the bridge is very high. When the incident occurred, the road was almost paralyzed.
According to the initial investigation, the vehicle causing the accident was identified as a truck from Kiên Giang Province with a license plate. The driver said that when he was going down the slope of Phu My Bridge in the direction from District 7 to TPHCM, the truck lost its brakes, resulting in the unfortunate accident.
Major Đoàn Văn Quới, Deputy Director of the TPHCM Traffic Police Department, said that after the accident, the Traffic Police Department also reported the case to the Director of the TPHCM Police Department and the General Department of Police, Ministry of Public Security. "Our unit has also cooperated closely with the investigation team of the TP Thủ Đức Police Department to investigate the scene, provide emergency aid to the victims, and inspect the vehicles and clean up the scene. We have also increased the number of police officers to direct traffic and ensure that vehicles can move smoothly on Phu My Bridge," he said.
The number of casualties in the accident has not been determined yet.
The accident occurred near the end of the working day, making the traffic congestion even more severe.
Many drivers got out of their vehicles and stood on the road or sat on the median strip to chat with their colleagues to kill time due to severe congestion. Driver Khánh said: "I was driving to Phu My Bridge to pick up passengers when I got stuck here for nearly an hour and couldn't move, causing my work to be delayed, and I couldn't pick up more passengers," he said.
Phu My Bridge is the largest cable-stayed bridge in TPHCM, spanning the Sài Gòn River, with a total investment of 2,100 billion VND, started in 2005 and completed in 4 years. However, this major traffic route has become overloaded, and when accidents occur, severe congestion often occurs.
Le Van Thinh Hospital (TPHCM) said that around 15h on August 8, the Emergency Department of this hospital received 2 cases related to the series of accidents on Phu My Bridge.
According to that, the two patients were a woman born in 1974 who was admitted in a state of observation for head trauma, and a male patient born in 1979 who was admitted with a facial wound and a left knee wound. After the initial examination, the doctors concluded that the patients were not in danger of life.
