Over the past few months, if you pass by Dau Sau Giua Bridge (Tran Hoang Na Street, Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City), it is not difficult to see the image of water hyacinths intertwined to cover the surface of Dau Sau Canal, stretching hundreds of meters.People living on both sides of this canal said that the water in the canal has been stagnant for a long time without being cleared, and the rapid growth of water hyacinth has turned this place into a breeding ground for larvae and mosquitoes, threatening people's health.Living in a dense water hyacinth surrounding her house, Mrs. Tran Thi Tu (Area 6, An Khanh Ward) was upset: "Water hyacinth grows up to cover the trash and wastewater below. Every day, my family is worried about dengue fever, especially during the rainy season when it is even more dangerous. My children and grandchildren sometimes come over to play but I don't let them go behind the house because there are too many mosquitoes."It is known that Ms. Tu has repeatedly presented the issue of dredging the Dau Sau canal to the local authorities when the dredging project of this canal was behind schedule. However, until now, garbage and water hyacinth are still intertwined and flooded behind her house.Occasionally this area also has many reptiles and insects attacking people's houses.In addition, when traveling a short distance from Dau Sau bridge (An Binh ward) to 30/4 street, less than 500m, people were also fed up when seeing the messy garbage collection scene in front of the gate of Can Tho Traditional Medicine Hospital (Hung Loi ward).The leachate was thick and smelled strong.People had to bow their heads and hold their breath because of the stench coming from the garbage."We live within a radius of about 2km and are surrounded by the fear of infectious diseases. People living in this area are all afraid of potential diseases. I just hope the city will soon have a solution to help improve water and waste sources" - Mr. Nguyen Phuong Tung (An Binh ward, Ninh Kieu district) shared.
It is known that the Rach Dau Sau renovation project belongs to the CT3-PW-1.17 package of the Can Tho City Development and Urban Resilience Project (Project 3) which started on September 30, 2022 and ended according to the contract on May 31, 2024 (20 months). However, difficulties in site clearance have greatly affected the construction progress of the package.
Regarding the waste situation, at the end of August 2024, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City also requested the Chairmen of the People's Committees of districts and towns, based on their assigned functions and tasks, to strengthen their responsibilities and rectify the state management of domestic solid waste in the area.
In addition, it is necessary to completely resolve the problem of littering and uncollected waste that pollutes the environment, creates bad odors, affects the lives and activities of the community and urban aesthetics.
