Completed removal of median strip on major road in Ho Chi Minh City

Previously, in the 2-wheel lane of Vo Van Kiet Street (right side of the route from Tan Kien intersection to Saigon River tunnel) from Km 4 + 900 to Km 12 + 900, there were 2 road sections 3 - 3.5m wide and 2 - 2.5m wide separated by a hard median strip, with a continuous grass bed with an average width of 0.75m and a tree bed with an average width of 2m.

The Urban Traffic Management and Operation Center (HCMC Department of Transport) said that the traffic volume on the route has increased, so the lane arrangement like that causes congestion as well as collisions between vehicles.

Mr. Nguyen Van Y (Binh Tan District) said that removing the median strip on the above road has partly reduced traffic congestion during morning rush hour. "I see that the number of cars traveling on this road is often higher, and there are also more traffic jams. Therefore, the city can consider expanding more car lanes," Mr. Y said.

Vo Van Kiet Street is 60m wide (6-10 lanes), about 13km long from Calmette Bridge (District 1) to the National Highway 1 intersection (Binh Chanh District), located in the East-West Highway axis of Ho Chi Minh City. The route opened to traffic in 2009, passing through 6 districts of the city: District 1, 5, 6, 8, Binh Tan and Binh Chanh District, is considered a vital route, connecting Ho Chi Minh City with localities in the key economic region of the South.
