It has been 2 months since the landfill holes at Ngoc Hoi solid waste treatment area had an incident, many people have not yet been compensated.
Garbage pollutes water sources, overflowing into fish ponds of the people, dead fish dry the whites of the ponds. Many fish ponds are ready to be harvested but all the fish have died, farmers are left empty-handed.
Most households have borrowed from banks to build fish ponds, now the fish are dead or washed away, cannot be harvested, and are in debt because they cannot afford to pay the bank.
Mr. Giap Van Truong, residing in Bo Y commune, Quang Ngai, sadly said: For more than 30 years of starting a business in the Central Highlands, the whole family has relied on fish ponds and gardens. However, in just one moment, the property flowed into the river and stream. I am afraid my family will return to poverty.
Many gardens and fields of farmers were attacked by wastewater, completely damaged.
Not to mention, bottles, pieces of glass, nylon, syringes... are floating everywhere; garbage is stuck on tree branches, in fish ponds, coffee plantations, endangering people.
Garbage and wastewater are dumped, the environment is seriously polluted, people have to endure the stench, affecting their health.
Therefore, not only compensating for damages to the people, another important thing that must be done immediately is to handle water pollution and land pollution.
The burst holes contain garbage, mud, leachate and toxic chemicals stagnant under the soil and rock, seeping into water sources and trees. If not handled, it will affect people's farming and cultivation.
Fish cannot live in polluted water, and plants cannot thrive in toxic soil. People do not have enough capacity to fix and clean up water sources and cultivated land. This big matter is the responsibility of the government.
Mr. Ho Trong Phuong - Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Quang Ngai province - advised the Provincial People's Committee to request the construction unit, Bao Tran Kon Tum One Member Co., Ltd., to support people in overcoming the damage.
However, according to some households, Bao Tran Kon Tum LLC offered compensation at too low a level, for example, in the case of 1 billion VND in damage, it was suggested that support... 39 million VND.
To be fair, local government agencies must step in, inspect, and determine the correct level of damage, forcing businesses to fully compensate the people.
The principle is not to let people suffer, but also not to let businesses have to compensate too much for the damage.
