On September 28, the People's Court of Truong Xuan City, Jilin Province sentenced former Chinese Agricultural Minister Duong Nhan Kien to 2 years in prison. Duong Nhan Kien was accused of receiving bribes of more than 268 million yuan, equivalent to 38 million USD, in the period 2007 - 2024.
According to the verdict, Nhan Kiens actions caused especially serious damage to the interests of the Chinese state and people. In addition to the death penalty, Duong Nhan Kien's entire political rights and personal assets were permanently revoked, and the money from corruption will be recovered and put into the national budget.
Duong Nhan Kien, 63, held many positions such as governor of Gansu Province, Vice Chairman of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region before becoming China's Agricultural Minister in 2020. Duong Nhan Kien was expelled from the Communist Party of China in November 2024, half a year after being investigated and dismissed by the anti-corruption agency.
This is the latest step in a large-scale anti-corruption campaign initiated by General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping. This campaign has caused many senior officials to lose their positions, including two former defense ministers, Wei Phuong Hoa and Li Xuang Phuc.
General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping once warned that corruption is the "greatest threat" to the Communist Party of China and this situation is still on the rise.
