Below are some foods that should be avoided when combined with chia seeds, shared by nutritionist Avni Kaul (India).

1. Foods rich in fiber

Chia seeds are quite high in fiber. There are nearly 10 grams of fiber in a 28-gram serving. Therefore, when combined with other fiber-rich foods such as oats, apples, and pears, it can overload the digestive system.

2. Dairy products

For people who are lactose intolerant, combining chia seeds with dairy products like yogurt, milk or cheese can lead to indigestion, gas, bloating and stomach pain.

3. Foods high in oxalate

Oxalates are compounds found in foods like spinach, collard greens, and sweet potatoes that can bind with calcium and other minerals, forming kidney stones in people who are prone to kidney stones. Chia seeds are also high in oxalates, so combining chia seeds with other oxalate-rich foods may pose a risk for people who are prone to kidney stones.

4. Foods rich in phytic acid

Phytic acid, found in foods like beans, lentils, nuts, and some grains, can interfere with mineral absorption. Chia seeds are high in phytic acid, so combining chia seeds with other foods high in phytic acid can reduce your body's ability to absorb essential minerals like calcium, iron, and zinc.

5. Sugary foods

Adding chia seeds to sugary foods, such as desserts, sugary drinks, or cereals, may reduce the health benefits of chia seeds. These sugary foods can spike blood sugar, while chia seeds can help regulate blood sugar. Therefore, it is recommended to use honey or maple syrup to replace sugary foods.
