1. Sugar-free soy milk
Unsweetened soy milk is an ideal evening drink because it contains both protein and healthy fats, and almost no added sugar. A serving of 240 ml usually provides about 7g of protein, which helps slow down digestion and maintain stable blood sugar levels overnight.
2. Protein smoothie
A low-sugar protein smoothie before bed can help maintain blood sugar levels overnight by slowing down carbohydrate absorption and reducing nighttime hunger.
Because protein digests faster than carbohydrates, supplementing it in the evening helps you feel full longer and limits blood sugar fluctuations if you often wake up hungry or snack late. Some studies also show that eating protein before bed helps maintain muscle mass, which is important because muscle supports the body to use blood sugar more effectively.
You should choose a type with at least 15-20g of protein and little or no added sugar.
3. Chrysanthemum tea
Chamomile tea has long been used as a relaxing drink before bed, and initial research shows that it is also beneficial for blood sugar.
Chrysanthemum contains natural plant compounds called flavonoids, including apigenin, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Some small studies in people with type 2 diabetes show that drinking chrysanthemum tea regularly improves indicators such as hunger blood sugar, HbA1C (average blood sugar in 3 months) and insulin levels.
In addition, chamomile tea also helps sleep better, thereby supporting the body to regulate blood sugar more effectively the next day.
4. Cinnamon tea
Cinnamon is often advertised as a natural way to lower blood sugar, but the evidence is not yet consistent.
Some studies show that cinnamon can improve insulin sensitivity, helping cells easily absorb glucose from the blood. However, other studies have not found obvious benefits, especially when using different types or dosages of cinnamon.
However, unsweetened cinnamon tea is still a delicious, caffeine-free choice, replacing evening sweets – indirectly supporting healthy blood sugar habits.
5. Milk
A small glass of low-fat or non-fat milk before bed is also a good choice. Natural milk contains protein and carbohydrates, which help slow down digestion compared to sugary drinks. It also provides calcium and magnesium, two nutrients related to normal insulin function.
You should choose pure, flavorless milk, avoid types with added sugar because it easily increases blood sugar quickly.
6. Water
It sounds simple, but maintaining adequate hydration is one of the best ways to keep blood sugar healthy.
When not drinking enough water, the blood becomes thicker, causing blood sugar to increase because there is less water to dilute glucose. Drinking enough water helps the kidneys eliminate excess glucose through urine and supports many blood sugar regulation processes of the body.
Therefore, water is a smart choice in the evening. You can add a little lemon or choose sugar-free carbonated water if you like.
