Do you really need facial moisturizer?

Moisturizing helps protect the skin's natural barriers. However, the need to use moisturizer varies depending on the skin type.

Moisturizing is important for most skin types

According to Dr. Kimberly Lee - a cosmetic surgery and facial reconstruction expert in Los Angeles, USA, not everyone needs moisturizing with the same frequency. People with naturally oily skin often have enough sebum to support maintaining moisture on the skin surface, so they may not need to use moisturizer regularly.

Dr. Lee said that genetic factors also significantly affect the skin's ability to retain water and recover. Some people have healthier skin barriers, helping to maintain natural moisture and limit signs of premature aging.

However, for people with dry or mixed skin, moisturizing becomes an important care step, especially in cold weather. Dry winter air can reduce the amount of natural water in the skin, causing the skin to become dehydrated, dry, flaky and easily irritated.

In addition, indoor heating systems, cold winds, low temperatures or frequent exposure to dry environments can also damage the natural protective film of the skin, causing dehydration to occur faster.

Choosing the right moisturizer helps increase skin protection effectiveness

According to dermatologist Justine Park in West Hills - California, USA, using hot water, exposure to strong chemicals, environmental pollution, or a history of eczema also increases the risk of dry skin.

She believes that moisturizing needs can vary seasonally. Some people need more moisturizing in winter, while those who swim regularly may experience dry skin in summer due to prolonged exposure to pool water containing chlorine.

When choosing moisturizing products, Dr. Park recommends avoiding ingredients such as fragrances, parabens and alcohol because they can make the skin drier or cause irritation. Instead, consumers should prioritize products containing ceramide, glycerin, hyaluronic acid and seed butter - active ingredients that can absorb water and strengthen the skin's protective barriers.

For people with oily skin, Dr. Kimberly Lee recommends choosing a gel or water-based moisturizer, with a light texture and no clogged pores.

Experts also note that sunscreen is still an indispensable step in winter. Ultraviolet rays can still damage the skin even when cloudy or low temperatures. Therefore, you can choose a moisturizer with integrated sun protection index or combine it with a separate sunscreen.

In general, moisturizing is not the same mandatory step for everyone, but this is still a simple and effective measure to help maintain healthy skin, especially in dry and cold weather conditions or when the skin's protective barrier is weakened.
