On May 28, Quang Binh Friendship Hospital (Quang Tri province) said that it had just received patient N.D. K (5 years old, residing in Dong Trach commune, Quang Tri province) admitted to the hospital after accidentally swallowing a foreign object.
Through examination and implementation of necessary instructions, doctors determined that the foreign object was a coin with a diameter of about 1.5cm, located in the patient's digestive tract.
Fortunately, at the time of admission, the baby's health was still stable. After being monitored and evaluated by doctors, the patient was instructed to continue monitoring at home for foreign objects to be naturally eliminated through the digestive tract.
According to doctors, this is not a rare case. Recently, Quang Binh Friendship Hospital has received many cases of children swallowing foreign objects such as coins, can lids, balls and small objects in daily life.
There are many cases where foreign objects are stuck in the esophagus, causing damage to the mucous membrane, scratches, ulcers, and even the risk of perforation of the esophagus or digestive tract if detected late. Some cases require endoscopic intervention or surgery to remove the foreign object.
BSCKI Doan Tuan Anh - Deputy Director of Quang Binh Friendship Hospital recommends that parents do not let young children play with small objects such as coins, button pins, balls, bottle caps. During eating and playing, children need to be observed by adults.
When suspecting a child of swallowing a foreign object, parents should not arbitrarily handle it at home or try to induce vomiting, but should quickly take the child to a medical facility for examination and timely treatment.
According to doctors, early detection and proper treatment play an important role, helping to limit dangerous complications caused by digestive foreign objects in young children.
