Recently, the Department of Orthopedic Trauma Surgery and Sports Medicine - E Hospital (Hanoi) received a case of a young man brought to the emergency room in a complicated condition with a wound on his left hand due to a firecracker explosion.
According to initial information, while setting off firecrackers, the firecracker suddenly exploded right in his hand, causing serious hand injuries.
Upon admission, doctors recorded that the patient's left hand was complexly crushed and bleeding profusely. The wound is at risk of damage to tendons, blood vessels and nerves, with many foreign objects and necrotic tissues inside. If not treated promptly, the patient may lose hand function.

According to doctors, accidents caused by firecracker explosions often cause very serious damage because strong explosions can destroy deep structures such as bones, muscles, tendons and joints.
Faced with this situation, the patient received first aid to stop the bleeding, and at the same time, doctors conducted an inter-specialized consultation to comprehensively assess the extent of the injury. After agreeing on a treatment plan, the team performed emergency surgery to handle the injury and maximize the function of the left hand.
During the surgery, doctors performed dissection of crushed tissues, removed foreign objects from the hand, cleaned the wound and tried to preserve the remaining tendons, nerves and blood vessels to the maximum.

After surgery, the patient continued to be monitored and treated at the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics and Sports Medicine - E Hospital. Doctors closely monitored the risk of secondary infection and necrosis and planned functional rehabilitation for the patient.
Doctors say that firecracker explosions can cause many serious forms of injury such as soft tissue crushing, complex fractures, and even loss of fingers or even the hand. Burns from firecracker explosions can also leave serious sequelae, long-term affecting motor function.
Dr. Nguyen Trung Tuyen - Head of Department of Trauma Surgery and Sports Medicine recommends that people not arbitrarily use firecrackers, especially homemade firecrackers or firecrackers of unknown origin. Absolutely do not come into contact with firecrackers, and everyone needs to comply with the provisions of law on the use of firecrackers.
In addition, families and schools need to strengthen propaganda and raise awareness for teenagers about the risk of accidents caused by firecrackers.
Dr. Tuyen emphasized that when an accident occurs, patients need to quickly go to a medical facility with a orthopedic trauma specialist for timely treatment, minimizing the risk of loss of hand function.
