On May 23, Ho Chi Minh City University Medical Center Hospital said that the unit had just successfully performed the 100th kidney transplant. According to post-transplant monitoring statistics, the 5-year survival rate of patients and transplanted kidneys at the hospital reached 100%.
Dr. Do Anh Toan - Head of Urology Department, University Medical Center Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City - said that for this 100th kidney transplant case, preoperative diagnostic imaging results recorded anatomy abnormalities of the donated kidney.
The team has closely coordinated consultation with the Department of Diagnostic Imaging to carefully assess the anatomical structure, develop an optimal surgical plan and control the risks during the transplant process. After completing blood vessel reconnection, the transplanted kidney worked well and there was urine right on the operating table.
In addition, for donors, the team has applied 3D, minimally invasive endoscopic techniques to remove kidneys, helping to reduce pain, shorten post-operative recovery time and ensure aesthetics.
Out of a total of 100 successful kidney transplants performed at the hospital, there were 6 cases of kidney transplants from brain-dead donors and the remaining cases were performed from living donors. The routine implementation of both kidney transplants from living donors and brain-dead donors contributes to expanding treatment opportunities for many patients with end-stage chronic kidney failure.
For patients with end-stage chronic kidney failure, kidney transplantation is currently a treatment method that helps restore kidney function and significantly improves quality of life compared to long-term alternative treatments such as hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis, opening up opportunities to help many patients return to normal life.
In the coming time, the hospital will continue to promote the development of advanced techniques in the field of organ transplantation, strengthen multi-specialized coordination capacity, standardize treatment procedures and post-transplant monitoring. The hospital respectfully expresses gratitude to kidney donors, families and brain-dead donors who have donated precious organs, opening up life opportunities for many patients with end-stage kidney failure.
