On January 21, Hue Central Hospital said that on January 6, 2026, the hospital performed surgery for a male patient, 53 years old, suffering from polycystic liver kidney disease, end-stage kidney failure. The two polycystic kidneys grew large, causing abdominal compression, seriously affecting health, and forced to be removed before kidney transplantation.
Prof. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep - Director of Hue Central Hospital said that this is a very difficult surgery, within the orientation of developing specialized organ transplant techniques of the unit.
The surgery lasted more than 3 hours, with the coordination of many specialties. The Nephrology - Urology team in charge of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Ngoc Hung removed two polycytes kidneys with a total weight of nearly 10 kg, preserved the adrenal gland, and well controlled bleeding. The amount of blood lost was about 100 ml, the patient did not need blood transfusion.
In parallel with the kidney removal process, the transplanted kidney from a living donor was taken at the same time and transplanted immediately after. The blood vessel connection and urethral intubation steps took place smoothly; the time of hot ischemia was 5 minutes, cold ischemia was 25 minutes. The transplanted kidney was evenly pink and had urine right on the operating table.
After surgery, the patient recovered well, kidney function improved significantly after 48 hours, vital signs stabilized and was discharged from the hospital after 2 weeks of treatment.
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Ngoc Hung, this is the first polycystic kidney removal and simultaneous kidney transplant in Vietnam, a technique currently only very few centers in the world can perform, requiring high professional qualifications and close surgical coordination.
