Understand specialist doctors I and II correctly

The draft new Circular of the Ministry of Health proposes many changes in postgraduate training in the field of health, in which the noteworthy is the research to replace the model of specialist doctor degree I, specialist doctor II with a specialist training program with flexible time according to each major.

Specialist Doctor I and Specialist Doctor II are both doctors who have received in-depth training after completing the University of Medicine and Pharmacy program. However, these two levels have differences in training process, professional qualifications and scope of work.

It can be simply understood that specialist doctor I is a postgraduate in-depth training level, while specialist doctor II is a higher specialist training level.

Training time: Specialist Doctor I usually takes about 2 years after meeting the entry conditions. Specialist Doctor II usually takes about 2 years after having specialist level I or equivalent according to regulations.

Specialist Doctor I examines, diagnoses and treats in a specialized field. Specialist Doctor II examines, diagnoses, treats and can undertake more in-depth professional tasks.

Specialist Doctor I at hospitals, clinics and medical facilities. Specialist Doctor II at hospitals, clinics, medical facilities and practice and training facilities.

After graduating from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy and meeting the prescribed conditions, doctors can continue to study the specialized training program I. The training time is usually about 2 years.

BSCKI is deeply trained in a specific field, such as cardiology, neurology, pediatrics, dermatology... After completing the program, doctors can work at hospitals, clinics and medical examination and treatment facilities suitable to their expertise.

Specialist Doctor II is a higher level of specialist training. Usually, doctors who already have specialist level I or equivalent level and meet the enrollment conditions can continue to train in specialist level II.

This program helps doctors improve their knowledge and professional capacity in the chosen field. In addition to examination, diagnosis and treatment activities, doctors with specialist level II can undertake in-depth professional work, management or training depending on the position and requirements of the medical facility.

Specialist I and Specialist II are specialist training levels in the medical field, while Master and Doctorate are training levels according to the higher education system. The goals and training orientations of the programs are different.

Therefore, when evaluating the qualifications of a doctor, patients should consider the entire specialty, training process, practical experience and scope of practice, instead of just relying on the name of the degree.

Ministry of Health proposes changing the method of specialized training

The Ministry of Health's proposal to innovate the training of specialist doctors towards a more flexible model, focusing on practical capacity and meeting the requirements of the health system.

If the proposal is implemented, the current division of specialist doctors I and specialist doctors II may be changed. However, this does not mean that patients can assess the quality of medical examination and treatment based only on whether the doctor has a specialist degree I or specialist degree II.
