Boarding doctors are excellent medical students admitted to the postgraduate training program for 3 years, studying and directly participating in medical examination and treatment. However, according to current regulations, resident doctors are not paid. Instead, they have to pay tuition for the entire course. To partially support the cost, the Ministry of Health and hospitals where the trainee works have a small subsidy, but this support level is considered insignificant compared to the cost of living and studying.
Doctor of medicine: Salary according to coefficient A2.1
For specialist doctors, the salary is clearly defined in legal documents. Pursuant to Joint Circular 10/2015/TTLT-BYT-BNV (amended and supplemented by Circular 03/2022/TT-BYT), the training level of a specialist 1 is required to apply to the titles of general practitioner grade II or general practitioner grade II.
The salary calculation of this group is guided in Point b, Clause 1, Article 13 of Joint Circular 10/2015/TTLT-BYT-BNV: the title of main doctor (grade II) and primary care physician (grade II) is applied to the salary coefficient of civil servants of type A2 (group A2.1), with coefficients from 4.40 to 6.78.
According to Article 3 of Decree 73/2024/ND-CP, the current basic salary is 2,340,000 VND/month. The salary calculation formula is as follows:
Salary = Coefficient x Basic salary
Thus, doctors with a first-class degree are entitled to a salary from VND 10,296,000/month to VND 15,865,200/month, depending on the coefficient. This is the basic salary excluding seniority allowances, responsibilities, injuries or additional income from the hospital.
Resident doctors and specialist doctors are both postgraduate, but their goals, subjects and career paths are different.
Resident doctors are trained immediately after graduating from medical school, and can only take the exam once. Students studying and receiving medical examination and treatment directly but do not have a salary, have to pay tuition and only receive small support.
Doctoral degrees (1 and specialist degrees) are for those who have spent time practicing and continuing to specialize in a specific field. After completion, they can directly receive treatment, even become leading experts, receive high and stable salaries and many allowances.
