The mother B.T.H (36 years old, from Phu Tho) was pregnant through in vitro fertilization (IVF), 31 weeks pregnant, admitted to the hospital with severe preeclampsia, central placenta and a particularly heavy body weight of 115 kg. This is a particularly high-risk pregnancy, with many potential dangerous complications for both mother and fetus.
Dr. Do Tuan Dat - Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, A4, Hanoi Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital said that with a severe weight, the cesarean section poses a series of challenges for the treatment team. In such mothers, the subcutaneous fat layer is thick, the pathological markers in the spine are difficult to determine, making needle stitching complicated and risky for failure. In addition, thick abdominal walls limit visibility, make surgical procedures more difficult, easily cause blood loss and prolong surgery time. After surgery, the patient also faces a higher risk of infection of the surgical site, pulse stasis or respiratory failure.
On the basis of severe preeclampsia and central placenta previa - two conditions that can directly threaten the mother's life - the indication for early cesarean section was made after interdisciplinary consultation.
The surgical team was directly performed by Dr. Do Tuan Dat, with close coordination between Anesthesiologists and the Neonatal Department. All nutritional, resuscitation and newborn care plans are carefully prepared to ensure maximum safety for both mother and child.
After a stressful surgery, the 2,200g baby boy was born safely. Immediately after crying, the baby was transferred to the Neonatal Department for special monitoring and care due to premature birth at week 31. The mother was actively resuscitated after surgery, her health improved well and there were no complications. Currently, both mother and child are healthy and have been discharged from the hospital.
According to doctors, being overweight is a factor that increases the risk of obstetric complications, especially when accompanied by preeclampsia, icted vegetables or gestational diabetes. Controlling weight, blood pressure and blood sugar before and during pregnancy plays an important role in preventing complications.
