The process of decreasing the immune system with age
According to Dr. Chandana Narayana, Senior Consultant and Physician, Kinder Hospital - Bangalore (India), as we age, the body produces fewer immune cells, especially T cells, which play an important role in fighting infections. The aging process also causes prolonged mild chronic inflammation and slows down cell regeneration, making the immune response less effective against new pathogens.
Although the immune system can weaken with age, that does not mean you are more susceptible to the disease. Making positive changes in lifestyle and taking care of your health properly can help increase resistance and reduce the risk of disease.
How to boost immunity as you age
Prioritize nutrition: Eating a balanced diet with adequate vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants helps strengthen the immune system. Foods rich in vitamins C, D, E, zinc and selenium are good choices to increase resistance. Ensuring a rich diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and protein-rich foods helps the body stay healthier.
Exercise regularly: Physical activities such as walking, yoga or swimming help increase blood circulation, reduce inflammation and improve immunity. Regular exercise helps maintain a healthy weight and improve sleep quality.
Manage stress: Prolonged stress reduces the effectiveness of the immune system. Practice relaxation methods such as meditation, deep breathing, or engaging in activities such as listening to music, painting to reduce stress and increase resistance.
Get enough sleep: Sleep helps the body recover and regenerate immune cells. Getting 7-8 hours of sleep each night helps increase disease resistance and keep the body healthy.
Stay hydrated: Drinking enough water helps maintain electrolyte balance and supports the body's detoxification functions. Dehydration reduces resistance, so don't forget to drink enough water, especially in the summer or when exercising.
