On May 10, Song Tu Tay Island Infirmary, Truong Sa District (Khanh Hoa Province) said it had promptly received and treated a fisherman who suffered from severe acute hypotension while fishing in the Truong Sa archipelago.
The patient is Mr. Tran Van U (born in 1986, from Binh Thuan), a crew member of fishing boat BT 97669 TS captained by Mr. Tran Huu Khiem (born in 1974).
According to information from the patient, on May 8, he took a two-way diving and began to show symptoms such as numbness in the limbs and diarrhea. However, the next day he continued to diving again but the signs did not improve.
At around 4:30 p.m. on May 9, Mr. U was taken to the hospital by his teammates in a state of alertness, good contact, and self-breathing, but showed signs of weakness in both legs, numbness from the lower umbilical cord and below, urinary difficulty, and muscle strength in both legs only reached 4/5.
Immediately after receiving the treatment, the doctors at the infirmary reported to their superiors, consulted with the Navy Medical Institute and quickly performed emergency care according to the following procedures: treatment of hypertension according to the 6 regimen, oxygen therapy, IV fluids, anti- platelet collection, urine placement and close monitoring of the patient's condition.
Through examination and diagnosis, doctors determined that Mr. U had acute type 2 hypothyroidism, caused by diving up to 20m deep, with symptoms starting after 20 hours from the last diving.
This is a dangerous condition that can lead to paralysis if not treated promptly.
Thanks to early detection and proper treatment according to professional procedures, up to now, the patient's condition has stabilized, and he continues to be monitored and actively cared for at Song Tu Tay Island infirmary.
