Rescuing a patient with severed cervical artery, critical blood loss

Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital (HCMC) has just successfully saved a patient with particularly serious injuries with severed large blood vessels in the neck area.

The patient is male, named T.X. T. (born in 2006, residing in Cho Lon ward), was brought to the Emergency Department in a state of multiple chest injuries after a domestic accident. When admitted to the hospital, the patient had many wounds on his chest, the most serious of which was a severely bleeding left neck base wound.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thanh Vy, Department of Thoracic Surgery - Vascular Surgery, Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital, who directly performed the surgery, said that this was an extremely serious case. The patient was admitted to the hospital in a state of severe blood loss shock, blood pressure could not be measured. Just a few minutes later, the patient fell into cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest.

Faced with a life-and-death situation, the emergency team immediately performed intensive resuscitation, both emergency blood transfusion and continuous external chest compression for 20 minutes to maintain life. At the same time, surgeons and resuscitation anesthesiologists urgently prepared the operating room. Only about 60 minutes after admission, the patient was transferred straight to the operating room in critical condition.

During the surgery, doctors determined that the patient had a severed left hypochondrial artery, one of the major blood vessels, located near the heart. "The amount of blood flowing into the left chest cavity is about 1.5 liters, and more than 1.5 liters of blood continues to escape through the wound. This is a very high risk of death if not treated in a very short time," Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thanh Vy added.

Thanks to the smooth coordination between the Emergency Departments, Thoracic Surgery - Vascular Surgery, Anesthesia and Resuscitation and timely support from the blood bank, the team controlled the bleeding situation, restored circulation and regained the patient's life.

BS.CKII Vo Duc Chien, Director of Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital, said that after 5 days of intensive treatment, the patient recovered and was discharged in stable condition. "This is one of the very serious cases that the hospital has successfully treated, thereby continuing to affirm the specialized emergency capacity and quick response ability in life-and-death situations," BS.CKII Vo Duc Chien emphasized.

The success of the case is not only meaningful in saving patients by a hair's breadth, but also shows the professional bravery and effective coordination of the medical team in handling critical injuries.
