Pure and refined olive oils have large nutritional differences. The right choice can better support brain health.

Olive oil is one of the common fats in a healthy diet, especially a Mediterranean diet. However, not all olive oils are the same. The difference between pure olive oil and refined olive oil can directly affect health, especially the brain.

Pure olive oil is produced by cold pressing, almost without chemical treatment. Thanks to that, this oil retains many beneficial compounds such as monounsaturated fats, vitamins and especially polyphenols, powerful antioxidants that help reduce inflammation and protect cells.

Meanwhile, refined olive oil must undergo heat treatment or solvents to remove impurities and extend storage time. This process loses a significant part of beneficial compounds, making the nutritional value lower than virgin oil.

For the brain, pure olive oil brings many obvious benefits. Healthy fats in oil help maintain the structure and function of nerve cells. At the same time, antioxidants such as polyphenols contribute to reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, factors related to cognitive decline.

In addition, pure olive oil also has an indirect impact on the brain through the digestive system. Consuming this oil can help improve the gut microbiome, thereby supporting brain function through the connection between the intestines and the brain. When the digestive system is healthy, the process of transmitting nerve signals also takes place more effectively.

Conversely, refined olive oil, although still provides energy and some beneficial fats, lacks important biological compounds. Therefore, the positive impact on the brain and overall health is also limited.

However, refined olive oil still has an advantage of being better heat-resistant. This makes it suitable for cooking methods at high temperatures such as frying. Meanwhile, pure olive oil is more suitable for mixed dishes, light cooking or direct use.

Choosing the right oil depends not only on the purpose of cooking but also on the overall diet. Pure olive oil is recommended for regular use to optimize health benefits, especially for cardiovascular and brain health. However, it is not the only factor determining health.

A balanced diet, rich in green vegetables, fruits, whole grains and healthy fats is still an important foundation. When combined properly, pure olive oil can become a useful part to help protect the brain and maintain long-term health.
