From successful kidney transplant to liver transplant target
Since the first successful kidney transplant in April 2024, as of the first day of May 2026, 20 kidney transplants have been performed at Can Tho Central General Hospital.
Specialist Doctor II Le Hoang Phuc - Head of the General Planning Department of the hospital - said that the most notable is the kidney transplant in November 2025 when doctors had to race against time. Because the parts of the body that once belonged to a 35-year-old young man (brain death patient due to a traffic accident) have been regenerated for many organ failure patients.
Accordingly, 6 organ units have been successfully removed and transported to receiving hospitals for transplantation, including: 2 transplanted kidneys for 2 patients with end-stage chronic kidney failure at Can Tho Central General Hospital; 1 heart and 1 liver transplant for a patient at Central Military Hospital 108; 1 remaining liver transplanted for a child at the National Children's Hospital, 1 cornea expected to be transplanted for a patient waiting for transplant at Cho Ray Hospital.
Doctor Phuc added that, to continue the success in the field of organ transplantation, currently, the hospital continues to carry out tasks, investing in some equipment to serve liver transplantation work, such as: operating room, anesthesia machine, various types of testing machines... aiming for the goal of having the first transplant in 2027.
In April this year, Can Tho City General Hospital also officially announced the successful receipt of the first kidney extraction and transplantation technique transfer from a living donor.
BSCKII Ly Hong Khiem - Director of the hospital - shared that the unit continues to develop specialized techniques, and in the coming period, it will receive the transfer of heart surgery and liver transplantation techniques... Along with that, it is to further improve the conditions for facilities, equipment, especially the capacity of the medical staff.
Regional specialized health center
According to Resolution No. 59/NQ-TW dated August 5, 2020 of the Politburo on building and developing Can Tho City to 2030, vision to 2045, orienting the development of Can Tho City as a specialized medical center of the Mekong Delta. Thus, gradually mastering organ transplantation techniques is considered an important "key" on the journey to improve the city's medical capacity to meet the task of taking care of people's health in the region.
From the successes in kidney transplantation techniques in Can Tho, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep informed that in the past time, the city has identified prioritizing investment in the health sector, considering this as a key and top task in the local development.
For Can Tho Central General Hospital, the city highly appreciates the units that have made great efforts, gradually deploying and mastering kidney transplant techniques. She believes that each successful kidney transplant is not only a medical achievement, but also has profound humanistic meaning, bringing joy, hope and opening up a new life for patients. This journey ignites hope for thousands of patients with end-stage chronic kidney failure in the Mekong Delta.
