On April 9, Hue Central Hospital organized discharge for 3 pediatric patients who successfully underwent bone marrow transplantation, including 1 case of Thalassemia and 2 cases of neuroblastoma.
Patient Nguyen Tran Phuc V. (11 years old, Vinh Long) has had Beta-Thalassemia since childhood, requiring periodic blood transfusions. After determining that HLA was completely compatible with his older brother, the hospital successfully performed allogeneic bone marrow transplantation.
The remaining two patients with high-risk neuroblastoma underwent autologous stem cell transplantation. Among them, one case encountered difficulties in collecting stem cells but had its protocol adjusted and successfully transplanted in Hue.
To date, all 3 patients have recovered well and their health is stable.
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep - Director of Hue Central Hospital, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is an effective treatment for transfusion-dependent Thalassemia and contributes to prolonging the life of children with neuroblastoma.
From 2019 to now, Hue Central Hospital has performed 71 stem cell transplants in children, including 16 transplants to treat Thalassemia. This is one of the leading units in the country in this field.
