On the morning of December 23, Hue Central Hospital (BVTW) announced that it had just held a discharge ceremony for 4 special transplants, including 2 allogeneic bone marrow transplants for Thalassemia treatment with disagreed blood types (cases 13 and 14), 1 pediatric liver transplant and 1 heart transplant.
Of which, the 2 liver and heart transplants were trans Vietnamese organ transplants, receiving organs donated from brain-dead donors.
Both children with bone marrow transplant patients have severe Thalassemia and have to receive regular blood transfusions very early. The 13th patient, 26 months old (Gia Lai), was transplanted from an older brother with a disagreement in the main blood type.
Hue General Hospital has applied a new technique of transferring small amounts of pre-transplant blood groups, without the need for red blood cell division, helping to preserve stem cells and reduce treatment costs. After more than 1 month of transplantation, the child recovered well, gained 1kg, the chimerism rate reached 98.6%.
The 14th bone marrow transplant patient, 6.5 years old (Dong Nai), was transplanted from a 3-year-old intestinal patient. Despite some complications during the transplantation, thanks to close monitoring and intensive care, the patient was stable, his bloodological index recovered well, and he was eligible for discharge after nearly a month of treatment.
Thalassemia is a common genetic hemodiastic disease, each year in Vietnam there are about 2,000 - 2,500 children with severe illness. Mastering stem cell transplantation techniques, especially in cases of blood group disagreement, opens up treatment opportunities for many pediatric patients.

On the same occasion, Hue Central Hospital admitted 2 trans Vietnamese organ transplants. The 5th liver transplant was performed on an 8-year-old patient (Hue City) with severe progressed cirrhosis. The donated organs were coordinated from Ba Ria Hospital, transported by air to Hue on the night of November 9, 2025, the transplant was completed early the next morning. After the transplant, the patient's health was stable, liver function recovered well.
The 21st heart transplant was performed on a 56-year-old patient (Quang Ngai) in a state of severe acute heart failure. The heart donated from Cho Ray Hospital was urgently transported to Hue, the transplant was successful, and the heart function is now recovered with a blood clotting rate of 55 - 60%.
According to Hue Central Hospital, the successful transplants are the result of close coordination between units in the hospital with the support of the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center and related hospitals and units, continuing to affirm the hospital's ability to master specialized medical techniques.
