According to Professor Hau Pham Pham, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director of the National Center for Clinical Research on Kidney Diseases, hyperuricemia is a fairly common condition in people with chronic kidney disease.
Many previous studies have shown that increased uric acid levels are closely related to the risk of advanced kidney disease, so this is considered a potentially interventional risk factor.
However, according to current international treatment guidelines, new anti-uric drugs are recommended for people with chronic kidney disease accompanied by gout. For patients with only increased blood uric acid but no symptoms, there is still not enough evidence to confirm whether treatment will help slow down the progression of kidney disease.
To clarify this issue, the research team analyzed data from China's Large Kidney Disease Database, including more than 50,000 patients with chronic kidney disease accompanied by hyperuricemia in 28 end-line hospitals.
The results showed that, regardless of whether the patient had a gout attack or not, people treated for hypouricemia had a 15% lower risk of serious kidney events within 3 years compared to the group without treatment.
In addition, hypouricemia treatment also helps reduce the risk of progressing to end-stage kidney disease, reducing the mortality rate due to all causes as well as mortality related to cardiovascular disease.
According to researchers, this finding is of great significance in optimizing a comprehensive treatment strategy for people with chronic kidney disease, while opening up more scientific basis to consider the role of hypouricemia therapy in patients with hyperuricemia without gout symptoms.
