Reason why vegetarianism can still increase uric acid

Kiều Vũ |

Many people believe that vegetarianism always helps reduce the risk of increased uric acid and gout.

In fact, a vegetarian diet can still cause uric acid levels in the blood to increase if not properly built.

This stems from the characteristics of some types of plant-based foods as well as how to choose and balance portion sizes.

One of the reasons is that many plant-based foods still contain purines - substances that when converted will form uric acid. Beans, mushrooms, asparagus, spinach, cauliflower and some nuts all have different levels of purines.

Although plant purines usually increase the risk of gout less than purines from red meat and seafood, excessive consumption of these foods can still contribute to increased uric acid in some people.

In addition, many vegetarians supplement energy with processed foods or sugary drinks, especially fructose. Fructose can stimulate the body to produce more uric acid during metabolism.

Therefore, even if you don't eat meat, frequent use of soft drinks, candies, or sugary foods can still increase the risk of increased uric acid.

Another factor is insufficient water intake. Kidneys play a role in eliminating most uric acid from the body. When the body is dehydrated, the uric acid excretion process may be reduced in effectiveness, causing the concentration of this substance in the blood to increase.

Another factor is overweight, obesity, chronic kidney disease or genetic factors are also important causes affecting uric acid levels, regardless of whether a person is vegetarian or not.

To maintain stable uric acid levels, vegetarians should build a balanced diet, diversify food sources, limit sugary drinks and super processed foods, and drink enough water and maintain a reasonable weight.

Regular exercise also contributes to improving metabolic health. If you have increased uric acid or gout, you should see a doctor and follow their instructions instead of just relying on dietary changes.

Being vegetarian does not necessarily mean having a low uric acid level. It is important to choose reasonable foods, maintain a healthy lifestyle and periodically monitor health to effectively control the risk of increased uric acid as well as related complications.
