On June 16, 2025, information from Thong Nhat Hospital said that on June 13, 2025, the hospital, in collaboration with the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center and experts from many major hospitals such as Cho Ray, the 108 Military Central Committee, the Hue Central Committee, Children's 2, Forensic Examination Hospital 115... successfully performed an organ transplant from a brain-dead donor, bringing life opportunities to many other patients.
The organ donor was Mr. Nguyen H.N. (39 years old, from Phu Yen), was admitted to Thong Nhat Hospital for emergency treatment on June 11 in a state of severe traumatic brain injury, brain contusion, intracranial bleeding and deep coma (3 points in glasgow). Although doctors have actively resuscitated and consulted with interdisciplinary departments, the patient's prognosis is still very poor.
After determining that the patient was in a state of brain death, the hospital activated the Branch to mobilize organ donation, meet and consult the family. With a deep sense of humanity, the patient's relatives agreed to donate tissues, organs and body parts.
Thong Nhat Hospital quickly established a professional council consisting of experts inside and outside the hospital to determine brain death. By the morning of June 13, an inter-hospital consultation chaired by Associate Professor, Dr. Le Dinh Thanh - Director of Thong Nhat Hospital - with the participation of representatives of the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center and hospitals receiving transplants had agreed on a plan to take away tissues and organs.
The surgery started at 3:30 p.m. the same day. The 7 units of tissue and organs collected include: 2 kidneys, 1 heart, 2 parts of liver and 2 corneas. These parts were quickly transported by air and were guided by the Traffic Police to the hospitals:
Thong Nhat Hospital transplanted 2 kidneys to 2 patients. Hue Central Hospital transplants heart and 2 corneas. Children's Hospital 2 transplanted liver to a pediatric patient. The remaining liver was transplanted to a patient at Hue Central Hospital.
At the same time, the funeral for the organ donor was carefully organized by the hospital's Board of Directors, supporting the family to bring the body back to their hometown for burial.
Information from hospitals said that currently, 5 organ transplant patients are recovering well, 2 corneas are being prepared for transplant to blind patients.
organ donation - transplantation on June 13 is not only a medical success but also spreads a noble act of humanity. In the context of an increasingly long waiting list for organ transplants, the spirit of sharing the lives of deceased people has become extremely valuable and needs to be expanded.
