HCMC - Gia Dinh People's Hospital said that it has just coordinated with hospitals across the country to receive organs from people who donated to save 5 other patients.

The organ donor patient, Mr. C.G.C (34 years old, living in Go Vap District) was hospitalized in a state of cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, due to multiple injuries to the head, neck, and chest. The results of the brain MSCT showed that he had a severe traumatic brain injury, with serious injuries such as sub-brain hemorrhage, congestion of both sides of the tangles, sub- spinal cavity hemorrhage, diffuse cerebral edema, and multiple fractures of the forehead and temple bones.

Immediately upon receiving the patient, the hospital activated the red alert procedure, mobilizing leading experts on duty for emergency care, diagnosis and intensive resuscitation. Despite being treated with intensive resuscitation measures, Mr. C.'s condition showed no signs of recovery. Doctors have predicted a poor prognosis and a high risk of death due to severe brain damage.

Mr. C.'s family decided to donate organs to save the lives of other patients. Mr. C.P.L, Mr. C.'s father, emotionally shared: "The accident that happened to my son was too sudden. Although it was heartbreaking, my family decided to register to donate organs because I knew that in Vietnam, the number of patients waiting for organ transplants was very large, while organ donation sources were scarce. Hopefully, from my son's body, many other patients can be saved".

After receiving the consent of the family, the hospital activated a group of independent specialists, conducted an organ donation consultation process and performed a brain death diagnosis in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Health.

At 11:40 p.m. on March 1, 2025, Mr. C.P.L signed a voluntary organ donation application. After nearly 12 hours of resuscitation, the patient's coma did not improve, lost all reflexes, and showed signs of brain death. The brain-dead patient assessment council of Gia Dinh People's Hospital in coordination with the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center has conducted diagnostic steps according to the procedure.

At 7:00 p.m. on March 2, 2025, after three assessments, the results confirmed that the patient was brain-dead and did not recover. At 10:00 p.m. the same day, the family visited the patient for the last time and was given detailed advice by doctors of the Anesthesia and Resuscitation Department about his health condition.

Recognizing the family's wish to donate organs, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Hai - Director of Gia Dinh People's Hospital - has summoned a consultation with the Organization Professional Council and leading experts to assess the possibility of organ donation. Based on the disease's course, resuscitation process and the patient's condition, the council agreed that the patient could donate heart, liver and two kidneys.

This information was transferred to the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center, and Mr. C's parts were coordinated to patients waiting for organ transplants: heart transplant at Hue Central Hospital; transplants at Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital; necessary liver transplant at 108 Central Military Hospital; Two transplanted kidneys at Gia Dinh People's Hospital.

At 10:30 a.m. on March 3, 2025, the family was present to bid farewell to patient C for the last time. Immediately afterwards, medical teams from Gia Dinh People's Hospital, 108 Central Military Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy and Hue Central Hospital coordinated to consult and carry out the organ collection and transplantation process.

Thanks to the family's humane decision, the 5 patients had the opportunity to continue living. This noble gesture not only brings life but also spreads the spirit of humanity, promoting public awareness of organ donation to save lives.
