At the press conference to inform about the organ removal and transplantation from a brain-dead donor on the afternoon of March 21, Associate Professor, Dr. Le Dinh Thanh - Director of Thong Nhat Hospital informed that the surgery to remove tissue and body parts from brain-dead donor T.H.N (44 years old, male, Dak Lak province) was successful. 7 units of tissue and body parts were quickly transported to hospitals for transplant to recipients.
Associate Professor, Dr. Do Kim Que - Deputy Director of Thong Nhat Hospital added that on March 17, the unit admitted male patient T.H.N to the emergency room with many very serious injuries: head injury, cervical spine injury, chest injury, broken ribs, lung damage. The patient was admitted to the hospital in a state of cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest.
Doctors from the Emergency Department successfully resuscitated the patient's heart and lungs. After that, the patient was transferred to the Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation for monitoring.
Doctors and medical staff are active and dedicated to treatment. However, due to severe brain damage, the patient was assessed to have the potential for brain death.
The hospital activated the unit's Organ Donation Association, held meetings, and discussed with patients' families. After being explained in detail, the family suppressed the pain and agreed to donate the tissues and body parts when Mr. N was brain-dead.
The unit has activated the system to assess the patient's status on the basis of law and expertise with a panel of experts to assess brain-dead patients operating independently of the treatment process.
On the morning of March 19, after receiving the conclusion of the expert panel assessing the brain-dead patient, the hospital issued a brain-dead announcement on the same morning. At the same time, he chaired a professional consultation with experts from the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center, Cho Ray Hospital, Hue Central Hospital, and Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital. The experts agreed and decided to start the surgery to remove tissue and body parts in the afternoon of the same day.
2 kidneys were transplanted to 2 patients at Thong Nhat Hospital; 1 heart and part of a liver were transplanted to 2 patients at Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital; 1 part of a liver was transplanted to a patient at Hue Central Hospital; 2 corneas were transplanted to 2 patients at Cho Ray Hospital.

A representative of Hue Central Hospital said that the patient who received the liver transplant had stable parameters and had had his endotracheal section removed yesterday. According to a representative of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, the liver transplant has no technical obstacles, the patient is being closely monitored; the liver transplant patient (10 years old) is alert, with stable parameters, and is being monitored and cared for after surgery.
A representative of Cho Ray Hospital said that one case of a cornea transplant on March 20 was progressing well, the other case had just undergone surgery today (March 21).
2 patients who received kidney transplants at Thong Nhat Hospital proceeded smoothly.
A representative of the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center informed that in 2024, there were 41 cases of organ donation from brain-dead donors. In the first quarter of 2025, there were 19 cases of organ donation from brain-dead donors, of which 4 were in the South.
