On January 26, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital announced that it had taken and transplanted four organs, including a heart, liver, and two kidneys, from a brain-dead donor, thereby giving life to four other lives.
The patient was admitted to the hospital in critical condition and received intensive treatment but his condition did not improve. The expert panel determined that the patient was brain dead and eligible for organ donation. After being explained, the patient's family agreed to donate organs to save the lives of many other critically ill patients.
On the afternoon of January 24, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Bac - Director of University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Head of the Southern Region Inter-Hospital Organ and Tissue Donation Association chaired a consultation with responsible units to review preparations, plans for coordinating multiple organ retrieval and transplantation, assess the condition of suitable patients on the transplant waiting list, and ensure good compatibility with donated organs.
That same evening, the teams took turns removing the heart, liver and 2 kidneys from the donor's body, promptly transplanting them into the recipients continuously through the night. More than 200 doctors, nurses and logistics staff worked together to give 4 patients a chance at life from the donor's organs.
The heart was transplanted to a 12-year-old boy with restrictive cardiomyopathy, the liver was transplanted to a patient with hepatocellular carcinoma, and 2 kidneys were transplanted to 2 patients with end-stage chronic renal failure.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Bac expressed his deep gratitude to the donor's family for overcoming the pain of loss to give the priceless gift of life. This decision not only revived other lives, but also spread noble human values.
Previously, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital also successfully performed the procedure of taking tissue and organs from donors, saving the lives of 6 patients. Of these, the heart and two corneas were transferred to Hue for transplantation to 2 patients at Hue Central Hospital; the liver was transplanted to a patient with liver cancer; and 2 kidneys were transplanted to 2 patients with end-stage renal failure right at the hospital.
