On March 20, BS.CKII Ly The Huy - Head of Khanh Hoa Provincial Hospital for Tropical Diseases - said that from January 1 to March 16, 2026, the hospital received 1,127 visits for examination and testing of large liver fluke disease, detecting 190 positive cases.
During the same period, there were 1,817 visits for dog and cat roundworm testing, of which 1,259 cases were positive.
According to Mr. Huy, as a specialized facility treating diseases related to worm infections, the hospital has promptly treated and helped patients stabilize their health; and at the same time advised and guided people on effective disease prevention measures.
According to Khanh Hoa Provincial Hospital for Tropical Diseases, large liver flukes and dog and cat roundworm diseases are mainly transmitted through eating and drinking.
Specifically, people may get infected when they eat or drink food or water containing eggs or worm larvae.
Large liver fluke larvae often exist in polluted ponds and lakes, and also stick to aquatic vegetables if not washed clean.
For dog and cat roundworm disease, the risk of infection stems from swallowing worm eggs found in soil and sand contaminated with dog and cat feces; habit of not washing hands regularly; using unhygienic food and drinking water.
Common symptoms include prolonged skin itching, red rashes, fatigue, and abdominal pain. It is noteworthy that if you have large liver flukes but are not detected and treated promptly, it can lead to liver abscesses, causing serious damage.
Doctors recommend that to prevent worm disease, people need to eat cooked food and drink boiled water; do not use unhygienic pond or lake water. Raw vegetables need to be washed thoroughly, and can be soaked in salt water before use.
At the same time, maintain the habit of washing hands with soap, especially before eating and after contact with soil and livestock. People also need to limit eating uncooked fish, snails and animal organs.
Currently, Khanh Hoa Provincial Hospital for Tropical Diseases has the ability to effectively treat large liver flukes and dog and cat roundworms.
When suspected symptoms appear, people should proactively go for examination and tests to be diagnosed and treated promptly, avoiding dangerous complications.
