However, experts at Peking Tsinghua Hospital said that even people who do not drink alcohol are at risk of getting sick if they have an unhealthy lifestyle and metabolic disorders.
According to Xinhua, most cases of fatty liver today are non-alcoholic fatty liver, now known as metabolic dysmethic fatty liver disease (MASLD). The disease is closely related to insulin resistance, genetic factors, overweight, obesity, lack of exercise and a diet high in sugar and fat.
Associate Professor Truong Binh, an expert from Thanh Hoa Truong Canh Hospital in Beijing, said that many patients who do not drink alcohol are still diagnosed with fatty liver due to prolonged fat accumulation in liver cells. Lax exercise and unhealthy eating habits cause the body to have disorders in sugar and fat metabolism, causing fat to accumulate more and more in the liver and gradually form disease.
According to experts, fatty liver disease usually progresses silently, with few obvious symptoms, so many people only detect it at health check-ups. If not controlled promptly, the disease can progress to fatty liver hepatitis, cirrhosis, and increase the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
To protect the liver, doctors recommend maintaining a reasonable weight, eating more green vegetables, whole grains, limiting sugary, fatty foods and sugary drinks, and exercising at least 150 minutes per week, getting enough sleep and regular health check-ups. "Not drinking alcohol does not mean being completely safe from the risk of fatty liver," Associate Professor Truong Binh emphasized.
