What is anxiety itching?
Anxiety itch, often called psychogenic itch, is a type of itch caused by emotional or psychological stress or aggravated by physical causes. When someone feels stressed or anxious, the itching can get worse and the more they itch, the more anxious they become.
How does anxiety cause itching?
The following are causes of itching due to anxiety:
- Release of stress hormones : When you feel anxious, your body's stress response is activated. This causes the release of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones can affect your skin and sensory nerves, potentially leading to an itchy feeling.
- Sensitive nerves : Anxiety can increase the sensitivity of nerve endings in the skin. This increased sensitivity can cause normally benign irritations to become uncomfortable or itchy.
Skin problems : Chronic stress and anxiety can weaken the skin's barrier function, making it more susceptible to irritation and dryness. When skin is dry or damaged, it can lead to an itchy feeling.
Psychological factors : Anxiety is often associated with increased awareness and focus on physical sensations. This increased attention can cause normal, minor skin sensations to become more intense and uncomfortable. For example, when you are anxious, you may be more aware of mild itching.
Treating itching caused by anxiety
