How to do the lion's breath technique
Step 1: Sit in a kneeling position or sit on a chair with your knees together.
Step 2: Roll your shoulders back, expand your chest, press your palms down to your knees and spread them out (like lion claws).
Step 3: Inhale through your nose and look up, exhale strongly by opening your mouth wide, sticking out your tongue toward your chin.
Step 4: Inhale through your nose, exhale through your tongue.
Step 5: Repeat a few more times, then close your eyes and feel how you feel.
Note
Although the lion breath exercise offers many health benefits, there are a few things to remember when doing it:
- Relax your face and breathe normally a few times before doing the next lion breath. This is better than doing it continuously.
- If you feel uncomfortable or have difficulty breathing, you should stop and ask for help from an experienced teacher
- After completing your repetitions, inhale and exhale deeply through your nose for at least three minutes before continuing.
Who should not practice the lion breath exercise?
People who may have recently had surgery or an injury, especially to the face, neck or throat, should avoid practicing this exercise as it may cause discomfort or hinder the healing process. Pregnant women are advised to avoid this practice as forceful exhalation and intense facial expressions may not be safe for them.
