BS.CKII Nguyen Thi Dieu Tho - Reflection Department, Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital said that after surgery to treat refractive errors, wearing contact lenses again is not always feasible and mainly depends on the shape of the cornea after surgery.
According to doctors, after laser surgery, the cornea will be flattened to adjust the nearness. This change makes the curvature of the cornea no longer the same as before, while most contact lenses currently sold on the market are manufactured according to standard specifications for people with normal corneas.
In many developed countries, doctors can prescribe the production of "customized" contact lenses according to the correct curvature of each cornea after surgery. However, in Vietnam, this type of lens is not yet popular. Most contact lenses are manufactured according to common specifications, suitable for the majority of users.
If the corneal curvature after surgery is still compatible with the curvature of contact lenses available on the market, patients can still use them. However, in most cases after surgery, the cornea will be flatter, so wearing contact lenses will be more difficult," said BS.CKII Nguyen Thi Dieu Tho.
Doctors also recommend that people who have undergone refractive surgery should not arbitrarily buy and use contact lenses. If the lenses are not suitable for the curvature of the cornea, the lenses may be too tight or too loose, reducing the amount of oxygen to the cornea, causing discomfort, scratches and affecting eye health.
At the same time, contact lenses used for the purpose of changing eye color for beauty and aesthetics should not be applied to cases that have undergone refractive error surgery, which affects the eyes.
Therefore, if there is a need to wear contact lenses after surgery, patients should be examined by a refractive medicine specialist, re-measured corneal curvature and advised on the appropriate type of lenses to ensure safety.
